Insurance Tips > RV/Travel Trailer Safe Driving

Preparation:

  • Know the weight limitations of your vehicle.  The weight listed on the title likely does not include add-ons or appliances.
  • Overloading your RV in one area may cause a blowout.
  • Understand the dimensions of your entire vehicle, including air conditioners and satellite dishes, to avoid branches, basketball hoops, and low-hanging wires.
  • Practice towing your travel trailer or using your motor home to tow another item.
  • Adjust mirrors and double-check all towing connections before departure.
  • Secure all interior items before moving.  Sudden stops can turn a harmless object into a projectile.
  • Know the turning capabilities of the unit.  Be sure you have enough room to maneuver the vehicle.

On the road:

  • Never allow passengers to ride in a tow vehicle or travel trailer.
  • Every passenger needs a seatbelt.

Keep these items with your RV:

  • First-aid kit
  • Water
  • Blanket
  • Portable radio
  • Road flares and reflectors
  • Cans of compressed air with sealant or 12-volt inflator
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Matches
  • Pre-paid phone card or cellular phone
  • Jumper cables
