Preparation:
- Prepare an evacuation plan.
- Assemble a disaster supply kit.
When a Hurricane Watch is issued:
- Bring objects such as lawn furniture and trash cans inside
- Cover all windows of your home with shutters or plywood
- Fill your car's gas tank
- Recheck tie-downs
- Check batteries and stock up on canned food, first aid supplies, drinking water, and medications
When a Hurricane Warning is issued:
- Listen to the advice of local officials, and leave if told to do so
- Be aware that the calm "eye" is deceptive; the storm is not over
- Be alert for tornadoes
- Stay away from floodwaters. If you come upon a flooded road, turn around and go another way.

- Lie down in a low area with your hands covering the back of your head and neck
