Key dates in American Modern's history
American Modern Insurance Group was incorporated in 1965, but the company's history actually goes back to 1938 when its original parent, The Midland Company, was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio as an automobile finance company. Since that time the company has continuously transformed itself to deliver an ever-expanding array of specialty insurance products to homeowners and recreational enthusiasts.
Midland became one of the first companies to specialize in the mobile home finance business at both the wholesale and retail levels.
The company made its initial public offering of stock to help finance expansion.
Midland entered the mobile home insurance marketplace with the establishment of American Modern Home Insurance Company and American Family Home Insurance Company, which remain to this day as the primary subsidiaries of American Modern Insurance Group.
Midland created a vertically integrated organization that expanded its special focus on the mobile home market. The company manufactured mobile homes, sold the homes through 70 retail outlets, and also provided financing and insurance.
The financial downturn of the mid-1970s hit the mobile home industry particularly hard, leading to the discontinuation of the company's finance operations.
The company's mobile home manufacturing and retailing operations were sold to Champion Homes.
American Modern Insurance Group began to diversify beyond mobile home insurance, starting with watercraft insurance.
American Modern continued to expand its product offerings by insuring collector vehicles.
American Modern entered the motorcycle, ATV, and snowmobile insurance markets.
Midland and its subsidiaries were purchased by Munich Re.
The Midland name is formally "retired" as a public brand in favor of American Modern Insurance Group.
