Choose between two coverage levels

Full coverage

You and your boat are covered for liability, collision, and comprehensive losses. With full coverage you can add options to your policy.

Liability only

Your boat is insured just for liability requirements of your state. Physical damage coverage is not part of your policy.

Choose from three loss settlement options

Agreed value

For boats up to 10 years old, we settle total loss claims on an agreed value basis, meaning that you as the insured, and we as the carrier, agree on the insured value of your boat at the time the policy begins.

Market value

For boats 10 years and older, settlement is for your boat's market value. This is also called actual cash value or ACV. Depreciation is taken into account when determining the value.

Replacement cost

For boats up to 3 years old, you can upgrade your policy to a replacement cost valuation. If there is a total loss [?]
Loss
When the damage to a vehicle or property is at a level where the cost of repairs exceeds its value, the insurance company will define it as a total loss.
, your boat is replaced with the same or comparable model.

Every full coverage policy includes

Medical payments

The included $1,000 in medical payments [?]
Medical Payments
Included in casualty policies is coverage for medical expenses caused by an accident-related injury. It is intended to cover basic medical costs without the need to assign responsibility for the accident. The coverage amount is generally a few thousand dollars, and is separate from liability coverage.
coverage can be increased to $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000.

No lay-up period

We let you use your boat as much as you want.

No hidden deductible

If you have a claim, what you pay is what is listed on the policy. There are no surprises.

Tournament participation

Our policy includes coverage when you compete in the occasional water-skiing contest, fishing tournament, or sailing regatta. Serious fishermen should look at our Professional Angler endorsement.

Navigation

Other carriers may tell you when and where you can use your boat, even naming specific lakes and waterways. With American Modern, you're covered in the waters of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico's Pacific coast (north of Rio Santo Tomas, Baja), plus optional navigation to the Bahamas.

Claim free renewal

Flexible payment options

Option 1 -- start EZPay to automate your payments

Many customers want the convenience of monthly automated bill payments. With EZPay, a withdrawal is made from a bank account you specify, or charged to your credit card. We let you pick the date of the month for the payment (1 to 28). Once EZPay begins, we will stop mailing invoices.

Option 2 -- pay after we send you a bill

You either can pay in full at the time you start or renew the policy, or in many states we offer installments on a 2-Pay schedule – half up-front and the balance due in 60 days – or on a 4-Pay schedule – a quarter up-front with an installment due every 60 days. A service fee applies to each installment. Pay by personal check, credit card, or bank account transfer.

Some states place limits on the payment plan schedules we can offer or the service fee. To confirm, check with your agent or call Customer Care at 800-543-2644.

Understanding your policy

Before you add your boat to your homeowner's policy, compare the coverage with a boat policy.

Explaining why a boat policy is a better solution than adding an endorsement to your homeowners policy is best shown by a side-by-side comparison.

Boat policy

Endorsement

Protects your boat with a comprehensive
list of causes of loss
Covers just a short list of named perils

Depending on the age of your boat,
you can insure it for its:

  • Replacement cost up to $500,000
  • Agreed value
  • Actual cash value
Provides a $1,500 cap

Coverage for:

  • Liability
  • Personal effects
  • Emergency assistance
  • Trailer or boat lift
Not available
Covers damage to property owned by other occurring while operating the boat No coverage
Endorsements for additional coverage No coverage

Unless you are insuring a low-value boat, we think you'll agree that just adding an endorsement leaves you underinsured.

Help with the to do's

Getting the boat ready in the spring is not just about the boat.

Prepping a boat for that first outing depends on the type of boat – a pontoon, bass boat and ski boat are different – and where it was kept over the winter – in or out of water. Here are a few general things to consider.

Clean and test the engine. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations, but in general you change the oil and fluids, flush the engine with fresh water, clean the bilge, check the belts and hoses for dry rot, and test the battery.

Look while waxing. . As you protect the exterior with a new coat of wax, check that the hatches, railings and deck fittings are secure, and look for hull damage.

Inspect your safety gear. Outdated flares, threadbare life jackets, a half-empty first aid kit, and a radio with dead batteries won't help anyone in an emergency.

Check the trailer. The lights, brakes and wheel bearings should all be inspected, along with support bunks, rollers and straps. Really look at the tires, including the spare, for cracks – caused by exposure and non-use – and for low pressure – a leading cause of failure. Getting stuck on the road with a flat will ruin a weekend.

Don't do a Gilligan. After everything is ready, make sure the drain plug is replaced and tightened.

Staying safe

Boat training saves lives

The top five boating accident causes are operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed, and alcohol.

Too often, the consequences are deadly, according to the U. S. Coast Guard's detailed accident data:

  • 75% of all boating fatalities are due to drowning
  • 88% of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket
  • 90% of boat operators had little to no safety training when a loss of life was reported

Clearly, boat training saves lives. The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators publishes this list of boating education courses. Whether you are an experienced boater, or a weekend enthusiast, find a program in your area and refresh your skills.

As you head out, follow these Coast Guard recommendations
  • Alcohol and drugs don't mix with boat operation. They reduce your ability to make quick decisions and to handle your craft in all situations.
  • Practice the "one third" rule by using one third of the fuel going out, one third coming in and keeping a third in reserve.
  • Share your "float plan" with a friend, so they know where you are going and when you plan to return.
  • Check the weather forecast before starting out. Watch for changes in waves, wind or clouds that signal the approach of bad weather.
  • Wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. It should have at least a 50 m.p.h. impact rating.
  • Keep a sharp lookout for other vessels, swimmers and objects. Know where other boats are before you make a turn or cross a wake.
  • Never operate your boat in the dark without proper lighting.
  • Follow markers and signs.
  • Stay clear of vegetation.
  • Don't go out alone.
  • Do not exceed the maximum load limit.
  • Cold water cools the body 25 times faster than air of the same temperature. If you fall off your boat, get back on board as quickly as possible.
